About us

The Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), also known in Hindi as भौतिक अनुसंधान प्रयोगशाला (IAST: Bhouti k Anusandhan Prayogashala), is a is a premier National Research Institute dedicated to space and allied sciences.
It primarily operates under the support of the Department of Space, Government of India.
Located in Ahmedabad, PRL is renowned for its extensive research activities across various domains, including astronomy and astrophysics, atmospheric sciences, aeronomy, planetary and geosciences, Earth sciences, solar system studies, and theoretical physics. Notably, it also oversees the management of two significant observatories: the Udaipur Solar Observatory and the Mount Abu Observatory. (website)

Structure:

Astronomy & Astrophysics Division (AAD)
Faculty members in this division work on A&A across the electromagnetic spectrum. They operate the facilities of the Mt Abu Observatory, which has telescopes of 0.43, 0.5, and 1.2m diameter aperture with optical and infrared capabilities. Many of the backend instruments on these telescopes were built in-house at PRL’s facilities in Ahmedabad. Members of the division also work in the radio and X-ray domains. They are also involved in building and using X-ray instruments. (website)

Udaipur Solar Observatory (USO)
Members of the Udaipur Solar Observatory of PRL operate several telescopes and instruments to monitor the Sun at various wavelengths. They are also involved in using space-based instruments to study the Sun. (website)

Astrochemistry laboratory in the Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics Division (AMOPH)
AMOPH division operates laboratories dedicated to (among other topics) Experimental Astrochemistry & Astrobiology for investigating the changes induced in low-temperature astrochemical ices by electrons, ions (single and multiple charged), dust impacts and shockwaves. (website)

Science Topics

Stellar variability
Solar system bodies
