        About Us
The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), established on September 14, 2007, by the Department of Space, Government of India, is a premier institute for education and research in space science and technology. Located in Valiyamala, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, the campus provides state-of-the-art facilities conducive to learning and innovation. IIST aims to be a world-class institution contributing significantly to space research. Its mission includes, creating a unique learning environment driven by challenges in space programs, nurturing innovation and establishing centres of excellence in specialized areas, providing ethical, value-based education and promoting societal applications of technology, collaborating with national and international institutions of repute. IIST offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs, preparing skilled professionals for the space sector. IIST has seven departments engaged in frontline research areas in the fields of Aerospace Engineering, Avionics, Chemistry, Earth and Space Sciences, Humanities & Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics. With a strong emphasis on academic excellence and research, IIST plays a crucial role in advancing India’s space exploration efforts.Details on the academic programs and research initiatives can be found at the institutes website.
Structure:
The Astronomy & Astrophysics group comprises six faculty members interested in a wide spectrum of research areas. The group is engaged in both observational and theoretical research work. Current research programs include infrared and radio observations of Galactic massive star forming regions, the ISM, physics of Accretion around compact objects, astrophysical masers, multiwavelength observations of pulsating variable stars, and UV spectroscopic observations of the intergalactic medium and galaxy halos.Science Topics
